Variable frequency drive
Choose a VFD when speed matters.
A variable frequency drive, also called a variable speed drive or inverter, controls motor speed the whole time it runs. Pick one when the process needs different speeds, like pumps and fans that follow demand, and when running slower saves energy.

Soft starter
Choose a soft starter when only the start matters.
A soft starter ramps the motor up and down smoothly, then lets it run at full speed. Pick one when the motor always runs at one speed and you want to cut the starting current and the mechanical shock.

What is the difference between a VFD and a soft starter?
A VFD (variable frequency drive) controls motor speed the whole time the motor runs. A soft starter only smooths the start and the stop, then the motor runs at full speed.
